Buckland Newton Place

Buckland Newton Place is a quintessential Queen Anne house nestled
beside the church at the edge of the village. The warm red-brick façade
displays pleasing symmetry and the sweeping lawns are shaded by a
stately cedar.
Until recently, Buckland Newton Place was the home of the late Sir
William Aykroyd, Bt. MC, an aesthete with a passion for art and
architecture. When he acquired the house in the early 1970’s he
turned to
his friend, Tom Parr at Colefax and Fowler to decorate the house. The
delightfully faded interior as we see it
today represents a fusion of his
impeccable taste and the inimitable style of Colefax and Fowler.
Sir William was passionate about collecting and he set about filling
his
home with good period furniture and enchanting objets d’art. Many
of
these pieces came from leading dealers and galleries including the
legendary Bennison, Malletts at Bourdon House, Roland, Browse and
Dalbanco and the Hazlitt Gallery. These “new” acquisitions
sit very well
with pieces from the ancestral home, Grantley Hall in Yorkshire and
family portraits by Sir William Orpen (Lot 115) and Sir John Lavery
(Lot 114).
Although this auction boasts pieces from other collections, including
the
exceptional group of drawings by Henry Moore, OM, ultimately it is a
tribute to the style and panache of the late owner.
