| 270 | WILFRID DE GLEHN RA "St. Tropez 1925", inscribed on the reverse, 21.25" x 27.25". See illustration Provenance: Acquired from David Messum Fine Art, Cork Street, London W1. Private Collection, Sherborne, Dorset. Wifrid de Glehn RA, the painting companion of John Singer Sargent, had been hearing about the virtues of Antibes in the South of France from his aunt, Bellah Minod, and when he and his wife visited the "undiscovered" coastal villages and hill towns of the Alpes Maritimes they were enraptured. The artist's ecstatic postcards emphasise that the old fishing village of St. Tropez was totally unspoilt, dealing only in wine and olive oil. The play of the sun on the brilliant water and the reflections of the pink and pastel houses, which lined the quays, reminded him vividly of Venice. Literature: For a detail of another painting of St. Tropez see Laura Wortley: "Wilfrid de Glehn RA - A Painters Journey", page 60, plate 33. £12000-18000 | Nil |

| 271 | IVON HITCHENS "Blue and Yellow Flowers No. 2", signed and the reverse with a label inscribed with the artist's name, address and the date 1970, presumably in the artist's hand., oil on canvas, 16" x 29.25", in the original frame and behind glass. See illustration Provenance: The Estate of the artist Private Collection Beaux Arts, Bath Private Collection West Country Ivon Hitchens was born in London and studied at St. John's Wood School of Art during 1911 and at the Royal Academy Schools 1912-1919. His work was strongly influenced by the French post impressionists Cezanne, Braque and Matisse. In 1914 he moved from London to Midhurst, Sussex, where he adopted his characteristic technique of painting horizontal landscapes built up of fluid brush strokes of often vivid colour against a white ground. Peter Khoroche comments:"A first-rate Hitchens, in which surface pattern and spatial recession sing together and each part of the canvas is in relationship to every other part - in which pigment and brush-stroke can be appreciated for their own sake, yet mysteriously and simultaneously suggest something seen and felt - in which an emotion is conveyed whose source might be the stillness of an autumn landscape, or the shimmer of sea under a dazzling sun and azure sky - a first-rate Hitchens is as rare as a first-rate anybody else. The sixties and seventies were very prolific decades, even by Hitchens' standards. He was at the height of his powers. (See Ivon Hitchens, London, 1990, page 106). The present work dates from 1970 Hitchens once said: "I love flowers. I love flowers for painting. It is only that life's too short - one can't do flower paintings - not a carefully arranged bunch such as people ought not to do - but doing a mixed bunch in a natural way. One can read into a good flower picture the same problems that one faces with a landscape, near and far, meanings and movements of shapes and brushstrokes. You keep playing with the object (C.A. Bowness (Editor): Ivon Hitchens, published London, 1973 page 13). £20000-30000 | Nil |

| 272 | CHRISTOPHER WOOD The ships and lighthouse at St. Ives, oil on canvas, 19" x 15". See illustration Provenance: Purchased by REA Wilson, Esq. from The Redfern Gallery. Purchased in 1964 by Mr Charlton of The Holsen Gallery, Chelsea for his own collection. Purchased by Paul Cherret of The Reynolds Gallery in 1973 for his own collection of works by Christopher Wood. Acquired in 1976 from The Wills Lane Gallery, St. Ives, Cornwall Private Collection. Private Collection, West Country. Literature: The title of this work has caused some confusion. It was originally said to be "yacht racing at Portscatho" of the 1928-30 period, but it does not correspond to the size given in Eric Newton's book. It seems more likely that it is "the ships and lighthouse at St. Ives" of 1928 (see Nankivell Catalogue Raisonne no. 300 - ships and lighthouse Cornwall) (the measurement given as 15" x 18"). According to a letter from The Wills Lane Gallery, St. Ives dated 24th May 1976, the painting was taken to The Redfern Gallery in 1973 and seen by Rex Nankivell, who confirmed its' authenticity and also that the frame was typical of those used by The Redfern Gallery in the 1930's. Exhibited: Possibly The Redfern Gallery in 1938 no.231 (HS). Apparently then owned by Jim Ede of Kettles Yard. £5000-10000 | Nil |

Exhibited: The William Nicholson Exhibition (22nd March - 28th April 1990) at Browse and Darby, 19 Cork Street, London W1. no.39 This outstanding still life dates from 1938 and may be compared to a similar composition illustrated by Lillian Browse in her Catalogue Raisonne, no. 506. It may also be compared to a smaller still life entitled "Glass and Fruit" in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottowa. This work incorporates the same dimpled glass jug and two pears arranged on a single plate. This work also dates from 1938 and is similarly signed with a single initial. | Nil |
