It seems likely that this portrait formed a pendant to the portrait of Sir Alfred Newton, Bt. by Henrietta Rae exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914. A reproduction of this work is sold with this lot. Sir Alfred Newton, Bt. was Lord Mayor of London. He was a keen bibliophile and art collector. Paintings from his collection sold at Duke's of Dorchester in recent years include William Logsdail's "Bank and Royal Exchange" (sold for a3483,000), and Hendrik Reekers "Still life of flowers" (sold for a3264,500).
