| 186 | SIR FRANK BRANGWYN RA Figures in a rowing boat and other shipping off the Cornish coast, signed and dated 1888, oil on canvas, 21.75" x 29.5". See illustration Provenance: Sir Alfred Newton, Bt. and thence by descent Brangwyn first visited Cornwall in October 1887 sponsored by Frederick Mills, the head of a London firm of Artists Colourmen, who had a reputation for helping young artists in financial need. On arriving at Mevagissey he was instantly enthralled by the hustle and bustle of the waterfront: "The whole harbour was filled with boats and men getting ready for the fishing; it was a sight that knocked me silly". At the end of 1888 Brangwyn was forced to move back to London, but he returned to Cornwall on numerous occasions throughout his life. When Brangwyn exhibited "Bark Strippers" at the Royal Academy in 1888 several critics discussed his work in the context of the Newlyn School. Although Brangwy was never seriously affiliated to the school he was undoubtedly influenced by the colonies "plein air" style with which this work is imbued. £3000-6000 | Nil |
