| 581 | A GEORGE I WALNUT ELBOW CHAIR in the manner of Giles Grendey with a well-shaped splat beneath a curved cresting carved with a stylised scallop shell and leafy fronds within a scroll border, the outswept arms with scrolling terminals over a drop-in seat upholstered in associated floral tapestry, the seat rail veneered in well-figured timber, on cabriole legs carved at the knees with shells and pendant bellflowers and terminating in claw and ball feet, the outswept back legs with square-section "pad" feet, 29.75" wide. See illustration A chair from the collection of Percival Griffiths shares many features found on the present chair including the well-shaped splat incorporating a carved top rail, the distinctive shell-carved cabriole legs and the well-shaped splat. (See R.W. Symonds "English Furniture from Charles II to George II", London 1929, page 30, fig. 19). Giles Grendey (born 1693 - died 1780) was born in Wootton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire and was apprenticed to William Sherborne, a second-generation London joiner. He became a Freeman in 1716 and was elected to the livery of the joiners company in 1729. His workshop was in St. John's Square, Clerkenwell. This chair exhibits several distinctive features closely associated with his workshop including the shell-carved cabriole legs edged with scrolls at the top and terminating in claw and ball feet, the arched "shoe" moulding applied to the base of the splat and the carved shell decoration at the centre of the cresting rail enclosed by leafy fronds. £12000-18000 | Nil |
