During the period in which this work was executed, Godward's commercial and critical standing reached its' apothesis within an increasingly imperialist culture, which likened the expanding British Empire to that of Ancient Rome. Godward had lived in Italy between 1905 and 1907 and in 1910 he revisited Rome.
