137 FRENCH SCHOOL, 17th century "The Battle of Bassee" and "The Battle of Vorburgum", each inscribed in gilt letters "Basseia" and "Vorbvrgvm", gouache, 2.25" x 3.75", both in ebony frames overlaid with finely chased gilt metal mounts, cast and chased with masks, flowers and scrolls (2). See illustration Literature: Mentmore, vol. 2, page 30 & 32, no's. 11 and 17, both reproduced. Bassee, a town in the North of France was taken by the French in 1641, recovered by the Spaniards the following year and restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. £500-1000
