| 400 | CHARLES ROBERT ASHBEE: A LATE VICTORIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS TEAPOT of circular bellied form, spot hammered body, dome hinged cover with a green semi-precious hardstone cabochon finial, with a three-part elongated wicker-bound scroll handle, the whole on a raised circular foot with a punch bead border, by Charles Ashbee, London 1899, (c.12oz), 6" high. See illustration This rare teapot of 1899 was made three years after Ashbee registered his mark on 29th January 1896. By 1899 the Guild's metalwork style had been developed and by this date the number of workmen in silver had risen to nine. Stylistically this early teapot shows all the major design elements that came to typify Ashbee's work in later years. The elongated wirework handle, subtle plannishing, cabochon set finial and sparingly applied decoration are all key elements of the design vocabulary. Hollow ware from this period is uncommon not only due to the cost of hard manufacture but also due to the limited commercial success at this stage. £3000-5000 | Nil |
