| 199 | THE LUSHINGTON TANKARD An important Charles II silver tankard engraved with depictions of the Great Plague and the Fire of London with laudatory Latin inscriptions, together with the arms of Charles II and Sir Edmund Berrie Godfrey, makers mark "IN" in a heart with a mullett below, London 1675/76, 7.5" high. Provenance: Sir Edmund Berrie Godfrey's niece, Catherine Godfrey, who married Stephen Lushington of Sittingbourne, Kent, in 1699. Purchased by their son, Thomas Godfrey Lushington and thence by direct descent. In a letter to his son James Stephen, dated 16th May 1756, Thomas Godfrey Lushington wrote: "I have a large Tankard of Sir E.B. Godfreys, which I value, & Weighs 37oz 15dwt, by which you'd Observe if we Exchange you'l be a Gainer. And I shall have that Tankard kept in my Family (for I charge you never to part from it) which will answer the End I had in Buying it".
