| 681 | A SET OF SIX REGENCY "MAPLE" AND EBONY-INLAID DINING CHAIRS attributed to George Bullock, each with a curved rectangular cresting rail over an urn-shaped splat inlaid in ebony with sprays of foliage emanating from a stylised anthemion flanked by leafy tendrils, the uprights carved with an upper band of stylised lotus leaves, with caned seats and plain seat-rails on turned front legs, 18" wide (6). See illustrations Provenance: The chairs were purchased by the present owner in Exeter around 1980. At the time of purchase he was informed that they were probably originally from Endsleigh, Devon, the cottage ornee of the Sixth Duke of Bedford. The remarkably untouched contents of Endsleigh were sold at auction in September 2004 and included a number of pieces attributed to George Bullock. The stylistic vocabulary employed in the design of these chairs is typical of George Bullock's oeuvre. The front legs on the present chairs may be compared to four mahogany chairs illustrated in "George Bullock Cabinet-Maker" published by Blairmans/Murray for the Exhibition in London and Liverpool February-March 1988 as no. 52. The ebony inlay in the Graeco-Roman urn-shaped splat may be compared to designs from the Wilkinson Tracings (City Museums and Art Gallery Birmingham). £10000-15000 | Nil |

| 682 | AN IMPORTANT REGENCY BROWN-OAK (OR ELM) AND EBONY-INLAID CENTRE TABLE attributed to George Bullock, the circular top with segmented veneers radiating from the centre and inlaid with a central sunburst incorporating stylised palmettes and flowerheads enclosed by a border of leafy scrolls and anthemia and an outer ebony line, the plain frieze inlaid with an ebony band along the lower edge and the turned shaft with a band of overlapping lotus leaves enclosed by ebony mouldings, on a concave-sided triform base with inverted scroll feet, 54" dia. See illustration and details. Provenance: John Murray, Esq. Polmaise Castle, Stirling, Scotland and thence by descent. This magnificent centre table incorporates all the elements one would expect to find in a piece from the workshops of George Bullock. The pure Graeco-Roman design and the use of ebony inlay on a native timber ground are all typical features of his outstanding cabinet work. The Scottish provenance adds further weight to the attribution, bearing in mind many of Bullock's most important commissions were carried out north of the border. The present table has a rayed and richly mottled and burred oak top supported on an "altar-tripod" plinth base with ionic voluted seat, which may be compared to a centre table from Endsleigh, Devon, the antiquarian "cottage ornee" of the 6th Duke of Bedford (died 1839). The base may also be compared to a design for a sofa/writing table from the Wilkinson's Tracings (City Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham). The spectacular inlay on the top of the present table may be compared to other designs in the Wilkinson's Tracings, whilst the bold use of inlaid anthemia may be seen in a larchwood and ebony cabinet in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. £25000-45000 | Nil |

These occasional tables, or lamp stands, exhibit many of the design features associated with the workshops of George Bullock, including the distinctive turned columns and typical inlay at the top of the base, which may be compared to designs in the Wilkinson's Tracings. The inlay on the upper surface of the triform base may be compared to that found on a pair of firescreens invoiced by George Bullock to M.R. | 684 | A REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND PALE-WOOD INLAID CENTRE TABLE attributed to George Bullock, the rectangular top inlaid with an outer border of stylised flowers and leafage and a pair of rectangular-panelled end supports with conforming inlay centred by an applied foliate boss, the upper part of the support with applied libation paterae and the turned stretcher with a central beaded collar, on gadrooned platform bases with moulded semi-circular ends and lotus-carved corbels incorporating anthemia, with recessed castors, 57.25" x 29.75". See illustration Provenance: Private Collection, Wiltshire. The present table is conceived as a Graeco-Roman altar table and exhibits many features characteristic of George Bullock's oeuvre. These features include the inlaid decoration, which may be compared to designs in the Wilkinson's Tracings, the applied libation paterae, the carved foliate bosses and the highly distinctive corbel-enriched bases with moulded semi-circular end sections. This last detail may be seen on a pair of fire screens from Great Tew invoiced by Bullock to M.R. Boulton in 1817, whilst the corbel-like ornaments at the feet find parallels on the malachite-topped table illustrated in "George Bullock - Cabinet Maker" published by Blairmans/Murray 1988 as no. 36. Indeed, the severity of design displayed by that table is echoed in the present lot. A further comparison may be drawn with a rosewood and brass inlaid sofa table with ormolu mounts described in the catalogue of the Bullock sale in 1819 as "A sofa table of rosewood with octagonal ends and broad arabesque border of elegant design, inlaid with brass, supported on solid rosewood standards: Also richly inlaid with devices in brass and mounted with or-moulu 5'8" x 3' wide.". It was purchased by Sir William Cumming, who was by far the largest purchaser at the sale, acquiring no less than 78 of the 360 lots. £10000-20000 | Nil |
